Looking for a Thaw alternative?
One that’s stable on macOS 27.

Thaw picked up where Ice left off, and it’s a good free app. But on macOS 27 it is still beta software, and its stable release only runs on macOS 26. If you want a menu bar manager that just works on macOS 27 today, here’s how ClearBar compares.

Why people look for a Thaw alternative

macOS 27 support is a beta. macOS 27 changed how the menu bar is drawn, which broke Ice, Thaw and most other menu bar managers. Thaw 3 is the rewrite for macOS 27, and it is still in beta. Users report that some items don’t hide and behaviour isn’t consistent yet.

It’s built for arranging. Thaw is about laying out your menu bar: sections, groups, a second Thaw Bar under the notch, rules that move items. That is great if you enjoy tuning it, and a lot if you only want fewer icons.

More permissions on macOS 27. Thaw asks for Accessibility and, on macOS 27, Menu Bar Layout Access. Screen Recording is optional for live previews.

How ClearBar is different

  • Stable on macOS 26 and 27. One app, one release, both versions of macOS. Not a beta.
  • One click, nothing to arrange. Third-party icons hide. Apple’s battery, Wi-Fi, Control Center and clock stay visible.
  • Every app in one panel. Including apps you switched off in System Settings. Click a tile and that app’s own menu opens.
  • Memory use and Quit. Each tile shows the app’s RAM, helpers included, with a one-click Quit. Thaw doesn’t do this.
  • Accessibility only. No Screen Recording, no layout file access.

When Thaw is the better pick

If you want free, open-source software and you like arranging every item yourself, Thaw is a good app, especially on macOS 26 where its stable release runs. If you want a clean menu bar on macOS 27 today without setup, pick ClearBar. Still comparing? See the menu bar managers compared.

Moving from Thaw to ClearBar

  1. Quit Thaw and remove it from System Settings → General → Login Items, so the two apps don’t both try to hide icons.
  2. Download ClearBar and drag it to your Applications folder.
  3. Open ClearBar and allow Accessibility access when asked.
  4. Click the ClearBar icon. Third-party icons hide, and every app is in the panel.
