The best menu bar manager for Mac
on macOS 26 and 27.
Too many icons in your menu bar, and some lost behind the notch? A menu bar management app fixes that. Here is how the options compare in 2026, including which ones still work on macOS 27.
What a menu bar manager does
Every app that lives in the menu bar adds an icon to the top right of your screen. On a MacBook with a notch, the ones that don’t fit simply disappear. A menu bar manager hides the icons you don’t need, keeps the ones you watch, and lets you reach the hidden apps again.
Menu bar managers compared
1. ClearBar ($5 launch price) — our pick
Hides every third-party icon in one click. Apple’s battery, Wi-Fi, Control Center and clock stay put, and you can drag any app into the In the menu bar row to keep its icon. Every hidden app sits in one panel with its memory use and a Quit button. Works on macOS 26 and 27, asks for Accessibility only, and costs once.
2. Bartender 7 ($24.99)
The best-known menu bar manager, with layouts, triggers and automation. It works on macOS 27, but costs about five times ClearBar’s launch price, or $19.99 a month for Bartender Pro. See ClearBar vs Bartender.
3. Ice (free, broken on macOS 27)
Ice was the popular free, open-source choice. On macOS 27 it gets stuck on “Loading menu bar items” and hides nothing, and a fix has not been released. See why Ice stopped working.
4. Thaw (free, beta)
Thaw is a community fork of Ice. Its macOS 27 version is in beta (3.0.0 beta 3, October 20, 2026), so expect beta bugs. See ClearBar vs Thaw.
5. Hidden Bar (free, simple)
Hidden Bar tucks icons behind an arrow. Version 1.11.1 hides on macOS 27, but only the GitHub download; the App Store version can’t. It has no app list or memory view. See ClearBar vs Hidden Bar.
6. Apple’s own switches (free, limited)
System Settings → Menu Bar → Allow in the Menu Bar lets you switch any app’s icon off. The app keeps running, though, and without its icon there is no way to click it. See how to get hidden apps back.

Tools like Bartender and Ice are built to arrange icons. ClearBar hides them too, then goes further: it shows what every app costs and lets you quit it, without asking for a permission that can see your screen.

ClearBar does more for less. A clean menu bar, every app one click away, its memory use and a Quit button, your Docker containers too, on macOS 26 and 27, for a fraction of Bartender’s price and without a permission that can see your screen.

Questions
What is a menu bar manager on Mac?
A menu bar manager is an app that hides the icons on the right side of your Mac's menu bar, so it stays clean and nothing gets lost behind the MacBook notch. Good ones keep the hidden apps one click away.
What is the best menu bar manager for macOS 27?
ClearBar and Bartender 7 both work on macOS 27. ClearBar is a one-time $12 ($5 for the first 100 buyers) and only needs Accessibility. Bartender 7 is $24.99. Ice does not work on macOS 27 yet.
Is there a free menu bar manager for Mac?
Thaw, a community fork of Ice, is free but in beta. Apple's own switches in System Settings → Menu Bar are free too, but a switched-off app keeps running and you can no longer click it.
Does a menu bar manager need Screen Recording permission?
Not ClearBar. It only asks for Accessibility, which it needs to find and press menu bar items. Older versions of Bartender required Screen Recording; Bartender 7 made it optional.
