Hidden a menu bar app?
Here’s how to get it back.

macOS 26 and 27 let you switch off any app’s menu bar icon. The catch: the app keeps running, and without its icon there is no way to click it. Here are four ways to reach those apps again.

1. Turn the icon back on

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Click Menu Bar in the sidebar.
  3. Scroll to Allow in the Menu Bar.
  4. Switch the app back on. Its icon returns right away.

This works, but the icon is back in your menu bar, which is what you were trying to avoid.

2. Check behind the notch

On a MacBook with a notch, icons that don’t fit simply vanish. On macOS 27, click the new expand button in the menu bar to show them. On macOS 26 there is no built-in way: you need fewer icons or a menu bar manager.

3. Open the app again

Some menu bar apps open their settings window when you launch them again from Applications or Spotlight. Many don’t, and just keep running quietly in the background.

4. Use ClearBar to reach every app

ClearBar adds one icon to your menu bar. Click it and you get a panel with every menu bar app, including the ones you switched off and the ones hidden by the notch. Click a tile and that app’s own menu opens. Each tile also shows how much memory the app uses, with a one-click Quit.

ClearBar can hide third-party icons for you too, so you don’t have to switch them off one by one. Apple’s battery, Wi-Fi, Control Center and clock always stay visible.

Quitting a menu bar app you can’t see

Open Activity Monitor (in Applications → Utilities), search for the app, select it and click the Stop button at the top. Apps with hidden icons still use memory, so this is worth checking if your Mac feels slow.

Questions

Where are menu bar icon settings on macOS 26 and 27?

Open System Settings, click Menu Bar in the sidebar, and scroll to Allow in the Menu Bar. Each app has an on/off switch.

If I switch off a menu bar icon, does the app stop running?

No. The app keeps running and using memory. You just can't click its icon anymore.

Why do my menu bar icons disappear on my MacBook?

When there are more icons than space, the ones that don't fit get hidden behind the notch. On macOS 27, Apple's new expand button shows them. On macOS 26, you need to remove icons or use a menu bar manager.

How do I quit a menu bar app with no icon?

Open Activity Monitor, find the app, select it and click the Stop (X) button. Or use ClearBar, which shows every menu bar app with a Quit button.

Clear your menu bar.
